Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans and Keenen Ivory Wayans, who created the parody franchise that launched with the first movie in 2000, wrote the script for the new film.
The original Scary Movie opened in July 2000 and immediately reset expectations for parody at the box office. Starring Faris as Cindy and Regina Hall as Brenda, the film debuted to $42 million domestically-setting records at the time for the biggest opening weekend for an R-rated horror film and a Black director.
