Davonte Carraway, an inmate in Racine County Jail, was charged with first-degree intentional homicide Tuesday in connection to the Dec. 31 attack of Joseph Lee.

Family members gathered Sunday at a hospital to say their final goodbyes to Joseph Lee, a 35-year-old inmate at the Racine County Jail who died following an assault on New Year’s Eve.

Investigators said Carraway attacked Lee while in the Racine County Jail's day room on Tuesday afternoon. Shortly after, a correctional officer finished a safety and security check. It was only on the next security check that the correctional officer found the victim and then began lifesaving attempts.
