An old Safeway building on Pueblo's north side is getting new life with plans for a Planet Fitness. The old Safeway on West 29th Street has been divided into two addresses. The 635 W. 29th St. portion of the store is under construction for a new Planet Fitness exercise gym.
Safeway workers are striking at the same time as contract negotiations between workers and King Soopers are coming to a head. The union is negotiating with King Soopers and parent Kroger after a strike in February. That strike lasted almost two weeks before a deal was reached to pause the labor action for 100 days. That pause expired last month.
Currently, unfair labor practice strikes are limited to Safeway/Albertsons locations in just four cities: stores in Estes Park, Fountain and Pueblo, and a distribution center in Denver.
They made good on that promise on June 15, joining the first cities to go on strike, including Fountain, Estes Park, and a Denver distribution center. Later in the day, workers from the Littleton Safeway also walked off the job,
On Sunday, some Safeway employees formed picket lines to fight what they say are unfair labor practices. Strikes happened at stores in Fountain, Pueblo, Estes Park and a distribution center in Denver.
