The film unwrapped $7.5 million on Tuesday from 3,700 North American theaters. “Sonic 3” is projected to bring in $50 million between Wednesday and Sunday. So far, the animated threequel about a blue anthropomorphic speed demon has collected $60 million domestically. It opens internationally on Christmas Day.

That success for “Mufasa” isn’t coming at the expense of “Sonic 3,” which continues to hum along with $10.3 million on Wednesday. The video game adaptation now has $88 million domestic and should reach $125-130 million by Sunday as it begins its overseas rollout.

Disney’s Mufasa opened far less than its predecessor and ranked below Paramount’s Sonic 3 at the US Box office.

Heading into the weekend, Sonic 3 was tracking to $60 million in its domestic debut, while Mufasa was tracking for a $50 million debut. The Lion King sequel, however, is coming in behind expectations and could only open to $35 million domestically. It’s Friday of $13.3 million included $3.3 million in previews.

While the Christmas Eve box office at $25M was off -19% from Monday’s $30.9M gross, the good news is that the off-moviegoing day was ahead of last year’s (which fell on a Sunday — the worst scenario possible for the industry) $18.
