The TSA says passengers attempted to bring fewer firearms into DTW security checkpoints last year than in 2023.

Transportation Security Administration officers have stopped a record-high total of 16 firearms at the Des Moines International Airport in 2024.

More than 6,600 firearms were detected at airport security checkpoints by the Transportation Security Administration in 2024, and about 94% were loaded with ammunition.

The Transportation Security Administration released the numbers Friday. Officers stopped 95 firearms at Indianapolis checkpoints in 2023. Seven firearms were stopped at both the Evansville and Fort Wayne airport in 2024 and five were found at South Bend International Airport.

The Transportation Security Administration reported slightly less firearms were found at airport checkpoints last year than 2023.

The TSA wants travelers to know that yes, you can fly with your firearms, but there’s a right way and a wrong way to do it.

"Most people claim that they forgot that they had their gun with them. It is careless and irresponsible to not know where your gun is."

Despite the law, travelers continue to bring guns to airports across the country. In 2024, the Transportation Security Administration intercepted 272 firearms at security checkpoint at George Bush Intercontinental Airport,

The TSA detected an average of more than 18 firearms a day at airport security checkpoints. Incidents have more than doubled since 2015.
