More than 20 states will increase their minimum wage this year, boosting paychecks for millions of workers as rising costs squeeze household budgets. Raises in minimum wage went into effect New Year's Day for dozens of cities throughout the Bay Area. The statewide minimum wage rose to $16.90 from $16.50, but many cities in the Bay Area have ordinances that allow them to set higher minimum wages to help reflect the high costs of living in the region.
On New Years Day, the minimum wage increased for the fourth time in the past five years, and while this means some workers will get paid more per hour, it may cause problems for restaurants in our area.
