The House-passed version of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act was fiscally irresponsible. The Senate has made the bill worse.

The US Senate will begin voting on a massive spending plan, dubbed the "big beautiful bill", on Monday after weeks of contentious negotiations. Republicans - who control both chambers of Congress - were divided over how much to cut welfare programmes in order to extend tax breaks.

At some 940-pages, the legislation is a sprawling collection of tax breaks, spending cuts and other Republican priorities, including new money for national defense and deportations.
