The rare winter storm that is hitting the southern portion of the United States became historic Tuesday morning when the Lake Charles National Weather Service office issued its first-ever blizzard warning.

Snow has already started to accumulate across Southeast Texas. Despite seeing some wintry mix at the beginning of the event, according to a National Weather Service Lake Charles weather balloon, the region is expected to see only snow through the rest of the event.

A major winter storm prompts blizzard warnings, dumping heavy snow and sleet in a region where even flurries are a rare sight.

This is part of "the historic winter storm along the Gulf Coast and Southeast," the National Weather Service reported.
