Helene made landfall in Florida's Big Bend region Thursday night as a massive Category 4 hurricane -- the strongest hurricane to make landfall in the Big Bend on record.

Over a three-day stretch last week, North Georgia saw billions of gallons of rain. Crews are still working to get power to all Georgians. This unprecedented amount of rain cleared out weeks of drought conditions across North Georgia, according to Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Ashley Kramlich.

The vice president said federal money would play a major role in storm recovery efforts as she met with local officials in Augusta, Ga., and helped hand out food and snacks.

Helene is the first catastrophic event in U.S. history to affect two critical swing states within six weeks of a presidential election. Both Georgia and North Carolina have 16 electoral votes — enough to decide the outcome of the race.

Hurricane Helene has left a wake of death and destruction across Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and Tennessee after it made landfall in Florida on Sept. 26.
