Crews began repairing the only cargo port on one of Hawaii's smallest main islands while power was being restored to another island Thursday, two days after Hurricane Lowell skirted along the state's western edge.

On Sept. 7 and 8, Lowell passed by the Hawaiian Islands as a Category 2 hurricane, causing widespread damage across Hawaiʻi. This comes less than a month after Hurricane Lala also caused destruction in the state, with many still recovering.

Hurricane Lowell was skirting western Hawaii, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain and punishing waves, the National Hurricane Center said.

There was extensive damage across Kauai, and crews were using heavy equipment to push trees and debris off the roads, said Derek Kawakami, mayor of Kauai County.

(Update: Sept. 11, 2026, 5:45 p.m.) Most Hawaiʻi State Department of Education public schools on Kauaʻi will reopen to students Monday, Sept. 14, following a week of closures due to impacts from Hurricane Lowell.

Police described him as a 59-year-old man from Wainiha. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Hurricane Lowell remains a powerful storm on Tuesday, with numerous warnings still in place for Hawaii.
