NASA, Europa and Jupiter
A New Spacecraft Could Help Determine if There’s Life on a Moon of Jupiter
All of that, plus fuel, means the spacecraft tips the scales at approximately 13,000 lbs., which requires a bruiser of a rocket to muscle it off the ground. Europa Clipper will get that rocket, in the form of the 27-engine SpaceX Falcon Heavy, with over 5 million lbs. of thrust, able to launch more than 37,000 lbs. on an interplanetary trajectory.
NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft is set to look for life-friendly conditions around Jupiter
NASA is poised to launch Europa Clipper, a $5.2 billion mission to Jupiter’s fourth-largest moon, as early as October 10. The spacecraft will blast off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. It will study Europa, a possible home for extraterrestrial life, through a series of flybys after reaching Jupiter in 2030.
Nasa’s Europa Clipper spacecraft will investigate whether an icy moon of Jupiter can support alien life
Scientists have advocated for a mission to Europa since at least the 1990s. Nasa’s Europa Orbiter was cancelled in 2002, followed by the ambitious Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter (Jimo) in 2005, which was to orbit moons Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.
A Spacecraft Could Help Find Life on a Jovian Moon
Our planet is the only place in the solar system—and indeed the universe—where we know that life exists. But if the basic sciences of chemistry, energy, and biology apply, Jupiter’s moon Europa may be alive as well.
