STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A New Yorker has stepped up to claim a $1 million Mega Millions prize, according to New York Lottery officials. Adam Terzuoli, of Washingtonville, in Orange County, has claimed a $1,000,000 second prize for matching the first five Mega Millions numbers drawn on Sept. 10, lottery officials announced.

“We know that many people will likely receive tickets to Friday’s drawing as holiday gifts, and what a gift that would turn out to be if you ended up with a ticket worth a $1.15 billion jackpot,” Joshua Johnston, lead director for the Mega Millions Consortium, said in a news release before the jackpot rose again to $1.22 billion.

The odds of matching the five white balls and Mega Ball to win the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350. A jackpot winner has the option of taking an annuity or cash payment. The annuity is paid out as one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments, according to the Mega Millions website. Each payment is 5% bigger than the previous one.

The Mega Millions jackpot reset to $20 million after a ticket in California had the numbers to claim a $1.22 billion prize in Friday's draw.

The jackpot began building on September 13 and culminated with the December 27 drawing. Over this period, Mega Millions ticket sales generated $47.6 million for New York public schools and $8.2 million in commissions for lottery retailers, many of whom are small business owners.

Twenty-four lottery players in New Jersey won $10,000 or more last week playing Powerball, Mega Millions and New Jersey Lottery games.

A New Jersey lottery player closed out the year with a bang by winning $1 million in the Mega Millions drawing on Tuesday.
