A Michigan jury is considering whether a former police officer was justified in fatally shooting a Black man who had taken the officer's Taser and was facedown in a struggle.

The prosecution rested its case Wednesday and defense attorneys have begun calling their witnesses in the murder trial against Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr.

Moments after the prosecution rested its case, the defense requested to have the trial dismissed entirely. This request was based on testimony from two out-of-state witnesses for the prosecution, who spoke about former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr’s use of force during his deadly confrontation with Patrick Lyoya.

Day four of the Tyre Nichols state trial began with the defense calling more witnesses. Preston Hemphill, a former officer, was first on the stand.

Testimony in the trial of three former Memphis officers charged with fatally beating Tyre Nichols resumes Wednesday, a day after defense attorneys sought to chip away at accusations that the officers used unnecessary force to subdue Nichols after he ran from a traffic stop.
