Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) shares tumbled more than 8% on pre-market trading on Tuesday after reporting mixed fourth-quarter results, with earnings falling short of expectations, revenue surpassing estimates and full-year guidance coming in below analyst projections.

Merck (MRK) came out with quarterly earnings of $1.72 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.69 per share. This compares to earnings of $0.03 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items.

On a per-share basis, the Rahway, New Jersey-based company said it had profit of $1.48. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to $1.72 per share. The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.69 per share.
