Democratic state Rep. Angie Nixon has announced her candidacy for the Florida U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Ashley Moody in the 2026 election.

Black individuals were once banned from voting in some Florida primaries, an exclusion echoed in today’s closed party primary system.

The political committee behind the measure to legalize pot has submitted 714,888 valid signatures as of Thursday — still far short of the 880,062 signatures needed to get on the November ballot.

A spokesperson for the Smart & Safe Florida campaign said that per Florida law, “each and every time” the campaign found any discrepancy in petitions, it reported it to the secretary of state and also separated suspicious petitions before submitting them to county elections supervisors.

One official said the state's push to audit and toss marijuana petition signatures has put elections officials "in the middle of a political war."
