The approval for this rule by the board comes after State Superintendent Ryan Walters said he would enforce President Donald Trump's executive order to allow immigration agents into schools. However, there have been no instances of immigration agents going into schools in Oklahoma.

The rule would not block undocumented students from enrolling, but it would supply the Trump administration with information to aid immigration enforcement.

Parents enrolling children in Oklahoma public schools will be required to provide proof of their child’s U.S. citizenship or legal immigration status under a proposal rule approved by the State Board of Education.
