Winter ends on Spring Equinox, which falls this year on Thursday, March 20. The equinox occurs when the sun is directly above the equator, resulting in nearly equal daylight and night hours.

Punxsutawney Phil has been predicting the weather at Gobbler's Knob in western Pennsylvania since 1887. Phil comes out of his hole after a long winter sleep to look for his shadow. If he sees his shadow, it's an omen of six more weeks of winter weather. If there's no shadow, he takes it as a sign of early spring.
