Regardless of the Red Sox' activity (or lack thereof) at the trade deadline, they are still riding a lot of momentum. They are winners of five of their last seven games and were 17-7 in July. With a 59-51 record, they are one game ahead of the Seattle Mariners for the second AL Wild Card spot.

Boston came away from the Thursday deadline with just two new players, both pitchers on expiring contracts. Steven Matz and Dustin May were additions on the margins, but the Red Sox had something much bigger on the docket that they couldn't push over the goal line.

Brooks Lee hit a two-run single off Jordan Hicks in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Minnesota Twins a 5-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox after a 90-minute rain delay.
