U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoy to Ottawa is warning of consequences to the continental defence pact if Canada does not move forward with the purchase of 88 F-35 fighter jets.

Trump threatens 100% tariffs on Canada if it becomes a "drop off port" for China, warning the deal would destroy Canadian businesses and way of life.

China said on Monday that a preliminary trade deal with Canada "does not target any third parties" after the United States threatened to impose 100 percent tariffs on Canadian products if the agreement were finalised.

Trump has taken an aggressive approach to negotiations with Canada since he commenced his second administration last year.
