Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker rested his case Wednesday in the second-degree murder trial against former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr. Now, Schurr’s attorneys are calling what could be a lengthy list of defense witnesses to give insight into a 2022 traffic stop that ended with the that shooting of Black motorist Patrick Lyoya.

A Michigan jury is considering whether a former police officer was justified in fatally shooting a Black man who had taken the officer's Taser and was facedown in a struggle.

A current Grand Rapids police captain said Christopher Schurr acted reasonably in the shooting of Patrick Lyoya, a statement that contrasted with previous testimony in the case.
