The rise of bird flu across farms in California has raised questions about the virus and and its potential threat to humans. While the threat to humans is currently small, here is what you need to know about the state of bird flu.

Newsweek has created a map showing which states have recorded the most human bird flu cases, after the first human case of severe bird flu was confirmed in Louisiana. California, which has declared a state of emergency in response to the current outbreak, has recorded the most cases (34), followed by Washington (11) and then Colorado 10).

The person became ill after contact with a combination of a backyard flock and wild birds, the health department said in a news release. The department declined to release any more information about the patient to protect their privacy.
