Meta Platforms said it would appeal an $843 million European Commission fine for allegedly tying its classified-ads platform to Facebook, undermining competition.The commission on Thursday fined the Facebook owner 797.

European Union regulators hit Facebook parent Meta with a fine of nearly 800 million euros on Thursday for what it calls “abusive practices” involving its Marketplace online classified ads business.

The European Commission on Thursday fined Meta Platforms €797.72 million ($840.24 million) over abusive practices benefiting Facebook Marketplace, it said in a statement, confirming an earlier report by Reuters.

The European Commission slapped a €797, 72 m fine on Facebook’s owner Meta for abusing its dominant position in the market for personal social networks on Thursday, for preferencing its online classified ads service Facebook Marketplace.

The EU has fined Meta nearly €798 million (about $840 million) over allegations it abused the ties between Facebook and Facebook Marketplace to squeeze out competitors.

The European Commission has fined Meta $842 million for antitrust violations related to Facebook Marketplace. It said the company “abused its dominant positions” as a leader in the social networking space.

The European Commission said Meta had acted illegally in tying the Marketplace to the social network arm of the platform.
