Patrik Laine scored in overtime to give the host Montreal Canadiens a thrilling 5-4 victory over the New York Rangers on Sunday.

The Rangers are in no position to be letting winnable games slip through their fingers. A season-best point streak that reached eight games with a 5-4 overtime loss to the Canadiens on Sunday night at Bell Center is not nearly enough to erase the damage of the Blueshirts’ awful stretch from the end of November through December — but it’s a start to a much-needed turnaround that needs every point it can possibly get.

Coming back on four separate occasions, the Montreal Canadiens’ first lead of their Sunday night tilt against the New York Rangers ended up the 5-4 overtime winner.
