Gov. Healey wants Massachusetts communities to have the option of installing automated cameras that catch speeding drivers.

Officials from Boston, Cambridge, and elsewhere have for years sought the ability to use automated cameras for traffic enforcement, arguing it could lessen the burden on local law enforcement and help reduce crashes.

Massachusetts has become notorious for bad driving – a behavior that proponents of speed cameras say leads to hundreds of fatalities every year. Gov. Maura Healey is one of those supporters who is trying to get the Legislature to pass her proposal that’s attached to her next spending budget.
