Happy (almost) 178th birthday to us! 🎉 The Smithsonian was officially created by Act of Congress on August 10, 1846. The Smithsonian’s first building, known as the Castle, was designed by architect James Renwick, Jr., who later laid plans for the famous St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. Renwick was also the force behind another future Smithsonian building—Smithsonian American Art Museum's #RenwickGallery.
