Osprey catches 3 fish and realizes there is a 2 fish limit and like a good bird, the Osprey immediately drops the third fish. This is a great example of how Osprey can let go of their prey whenever they want. | Mark Smith Photography

The moment an osprey hits the water and sinks its razor-sharp meat hooks into a fish, the clock starts ticking. Somewhere below the surface, a freshly impaled fish is sending out all kinds of distress signals. For many creatures under the deep, those distress signals are like a dinner bell. The osprey has to get itself out of the water in time, along with its weighty catch. In this case, a massive pompano that more than likely weighs more than the bird itself. Unbelievable. | Mark Smith Photogra

Surrounded by gusty gales, massive waves and dozens of hungry pelicans, this young Osprey is fighting to secure its floppy catch, a huge mullet. The sooner the better because advertising a fish this large isn’t a great idea. Luckily for the Osprey, there were plenty of fish in the ocean and you can see the moment this poor fish goes still. Glad I’m not a fish. | Mark Smith Photography

Have you ever seen an Osprey skip across the surface of the water like a stone? Sometimes that’s the preferred method of hunting, especially when the fish are sitting right on the surface. Watching this bird navigate the entire process blows my mind. It literally snatched a mullet from the top of the water by its tail and never missed a beat. Glad I’m not a mullet! | Mark Smith Photography

This is an amazing example of why ospreys are perfect anglers. This bird didn’t come crashing violently into the water, it snatched a single fish from the surface with both sets of talons. That’s impressive. Good job Osprey and glad I’m not a fish. | Mark Smith Photography

During the height of the largest fish migration on the east coast of the United States, predators come from every direction and while this osprey struggles with its massive catch, something else lurks just below the surface. That is a hungry shark and it wants the osprey's fish but luckily for the osprey, the shark was a millisecond too slow. Now that the osprey is free and clear of the toothy beasts below, it only has to fight the wind and its floppy catch. I had an idea that this happened but

With a howling wind pushing in from the east, this Osprey uses the strength of the oncoming wind to practically catapult it out of the ocean depths. Without the wind, they just wouldn’t be able to easily wrestle a large Atlantic Menhaden from the surf like this, and because the bird doesn’t have a “good grip,” the wind becomes even more helpful, allowing the Osprey to kind of hover in place while it adjusts its cargo. | Mark Smith Photography

When an osprey crashes into the water at full speed, you never really know what’s going to happen. They might surface with empty talons. They might snag a minnow.Or… they might be locked in the struggle of their life, wrestling a fish that absolutely refuses to leave its watery world.I love how this bird kept one wing pointed up and out of the water the entire time. It’s almost a, “hold my beer,” style move but in this case maybe it’s a, “hold my perch” salute. I love the way it surfaces and shake

This Osprey Just Got CatfishedI’m always fascinated by what Ospreys pull from the ocean. You never know what they’ll wrangle from the surf. This one? Half a catfish. Just half. So… what happened to the rest? From the slow, cautious approach, I knew it was a catfish. Ospreys nearly always come in carefully when dealing with these guys. Catfish are prickly. They have sharp, bony spines laced with bacteria and a mild venom. Judging by its expression, I think it’s wondering the same thing I am: Where

As soon as this osprey hit the water, it was surrounded by a large group of gnarly, scurvy-laden pelican pirates who wanted to do nothing more than steal whatever the osprey surfaced with. The osprey knew it was outnumbered, so it dropped its catch before it even came out of the water, but it still had a wall of pelicans blocking its path. Not a problem for the Osprey. With no food in tow, one snarky pelican snapped its pouch in disapproval as the osprey made its getaway. I think it was going fo

After a quick dip into the Atlantic Ocean, this beautiful Osprey locked eyes with me and flew right towards my camera. Its fresh catch, a Jack, got an unexpected aerial tour of its home. In many ways, the fish was literally transported into another dimension. I always joke and say, “Glad I’m not a fish,” and this is the perfect reminder of why. I’m constantly exploring new ways to get closer to these incredible animals, so we can all see them in a new light. For the photographers out there, this

As the sun rises over the Atlantic Ocean, one lone Osprey has spotted a fishy breakfast in the surf below. This bird knows that a full-on dive into the waves comes with the potential problem of getting trashed about in the power of the surf, so it just skims the surface and plucks a poor, unsuspecting mullet from its watery home. Even though the bird didn’t submerge itself, it still managed to take on some water. In order to fly efficiently, it must get rid of that extra water weight with a nice

The Osprey is still my favorite bird to photograph and film. Their abilities never stop blowing my mind, and this one? Absolutely incredible. From the high-speed, feather-perfect dive, to the insane precision of snatching a needlefish right off the surface.Even with that slippery, lively cargo, it lifts off like it’s nothing. No one else around. Just me, the bird, and a reminder that nature doesn’t stop performing. Glad I’m not a fish! | Mark Smith Photography

Just when I thought the Osprey was plotting sweet, sweet revenge on those pesky pelicans, this happens. Osprey usually get along fine with each other but when there is a huge flounder at stake, there is no floundering around. Glad I’m not a fish! | Mark Smith Photography

When Osprey grab a hold of something a little more challenging, they often spread their wings out wide and use them just like an outrigger on a boat. The goal here is simple. Stay afloat. But the onslaught of waves coupled with a rather large fish that is trying its best to swim down deep is making things difficult. This bird’s choices are extremely limited. It can let go of the fish and start the whole process over or it can hold on and fight for its life! Hunger is a powerful motivator, and wh

I Got to Hold an Osprey Today!! But Not for the Reason You Think!!It’s not every day that you get to hold an osprey and set it free. When I first saw this bird on the water, I wasn’t sure what was happening, but then I saw the fishing line and quickly moved in to help. Thanks to Sterling Foster for literally giving me the shirt off his back to cover the bird and fearlessly helping me untangle the fishing line.Teamwork helped put this beauty back in the sky where it belongs. | Mark Smith Photogra

I never thought I’d get to witness an osprey diving right through a rainbow, but that’s exactly what happened. The real question is what’s at the end of that rainbow. Was it a pot of gold or was it something else? If you know the Osprey, then I think you know what it found at the end of its rainbow. | Mark Smith Photography
